An engaging sequel to the horror classic, Shining. The biggest strength is the completely different storyline from the events of Shining.
Ewan McGregor is splendid as always. A worthy watch.
I hope they're as faithful to the book as a film always; different medium, I know. But, if they keep the book ending then the almost 40 year wait will be totally worth it. BTW. Read both books; rewatch The Shining, then see Doctor Sleep.
One the best scenes of this movie. Still his father's spirit could have had some kinds of redemption, like in the book.
This is so almost a great movie. McGregor and Curran bring great performances, even though they are a bit overshadowed by Ferguson. There are some gorgeous and highly effective visuals, there's moments of pure tension and a few legitimately stunning scenes that remind me why we go to the movies.
But. br>
Maybe I need to watch it again but there was no sense of where anyone was. There's a lot of travel in this movie and there was rarely a sense of who is where or how far away things are from each other. Things like that bother me.
Possibly a bigger issue though is that this movie is in a very difficult position. The Shining is oft regarded as a cinematic masterpiece and one of the best horror movies ever. Unfortunately, Doctor Sleep is haunted by that greatness and instead of just being its own thing it tries to merge the past into the presence and that just epically failed to me. Seeing the Overlook again was great, but it felt forced into a story that didn't really need it.
The movie also revisits a lot of big moments from The Shining utilizing "look-a-like" actors instead of original footage. This was a mistake. The Shining is too well known, the original actors too unique and these new people trying to fill those shoes just feel awkward and wrong.
Don't get me wrong. The good is really good and it outweighs the bad. It's just that the bad was really distracting.
